Brief 1 – Final Images

IMAGE 1 – UNCLE SAM

I want you!! V2

This is the final version of my first image. It is very similar to my first version however with the addition of a hat that has become synonymous with the political campaign of Donald Trump. At first I thought that this addition was a bit too on the nose regarding my political beliefs (as the caption clearly shows a mocking of Trump) however the quote from Kruger regarding “direct address” reminded me that there is nothing necessarily wrong with a lack of subtly – whilst the changes are still rather simple like that of both Kruger and Duchamp.

IMAGE 2 – STALIN

Stalin2

This is the second of my final images for the appropriation brief. It again features a piece of propaganda as the appropriated image. this time a piece of Soviet propaganda featuring Joseph Stalin. A large issue in modern Russia is the normalisation and agreement with homophobia of the majority of the population. I therefore added the flag associated with the LGBT community behind Stalin, arguably the most famous leader of Russia which almost gives the impressions that he supports homosexuality. I kept the text the same on this image as it reads “Glory to Stalin!” in Russian. Leaving it in Russian means that the majority of the people looking at the image have no idea what the text says, which keeps somewhat of an illusion that this is an actual propaganda image.
